SPX, New Projects + Pictoplasma
Some early September updates :)
Small Press Expo
Last weekend I attended Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD! This was my first time at SPX and my first time tabling with my art in almost 7 years!
What is SPX?
“The Small Press Expo (SPX) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit created in 1994 to promote artists and publishers who produce independent comics. SPX hosts an annual festival that provides a forum for artists, writers and publishers of comic art in its various forms to present to the public comic art not accessible through normal commercial channels.”
For months I prepared prints, zines, and mini-comics in anticipation for the sale! And while I did not come close to breaking even on the costs for supplies, travel, and lodging I feel like what I gained in community was well worth the investment.
I met dozens of amazing artists, connected with editors and publishers in the industry and got to send my work home with a bunch of strangers! Work that very likely never would have left the 4 1/2 walls of my apartment, let alone the smoothest regions of my mind!
Across mediums, I can’t recommend getting involved in your local fairs and expos enough! It’s such a great excuse to follow through on a new project or share older work and ideas.
The personal highlight for me was having some of my work collected to be included in the Library of Congress!
“Loc Journey” zine and “Spooky Teacups” riso print
These bad boys will be cataloged officially in history, how COOL!
Mysterious New Projects!
I feel like I haven’t been sharing a lot of artwork on my socials lately and that’s because I've been working on art for things I can’t talk about yet! I just signed a contract for a job that I can’t wait to share!!! Stay tuned :o
In addition to this new job, I’m also developing picture books, graphic novels, an editorial portfolio etc, all of which take lots of focused writing and drawing time.
I’m feeling the September Scaries ahead of the October drawing challenges. I’m always so excited to get into them (Peachtober is my favorite) but they always seem to line up with other creative deadlines.
I have started sketching for Peachtober to see if I can make it work but only time will tell.

Pictoplasma NYC
As fate would have it, I'll be attending Pictoplasma on Sept 25th & 26th in NYC. Pictoplasma is a character design conference based out of Berlin that will also be hosting events in NYC + London this year. Some of my favorites to ever do it will be speaking on the panels and screening their work over these two days and I am so so excited to take it all in!
Those are all of my updates for now friends! Talk soon :)
